Martin Loy Jr (1784 PA-1847 PA)

Martin Loy Jr. (28 April 1784 Bucks Co., PA—1 January 1847 Schellsburg, Bedford Co., PA)
md. 1808
Elizabeth Ferguson (11 February 1795 Snake Spring Twp., Bedford Co., PA—11 March 1840 Loysburg, Bedford Co., PA)

A previous record I was given had her dates 1789 Snake Spring Twp., Bedford Co., PA—8 September 1861 New Castle, PA.

According to History of Bedford, Somerset, and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania (1884) Waterman, Watkins, & Co.; Martin Jr. was a colonel of the militia and served two terms in the legislature. He was the first postmaster of Loysburg, PA, a position he held until 1838, when his son John F. Loy assumed that position.

Martin Loy, Jr. was son of Martin and Margaretta (Huffman) Loy.

*There is a tree at FamilySearch gives her dates April 1824—1900 and indicates she md. William McClymonds in Columbiana Co., OH in 1867. At present, I’ve not been able to confirm this through census or other records. If the 1867 marriage date were true, then this might be a second marriage, as I could not even find her by her maiden name in 1850-1860 census.

**One source gave his death in Somerville, KY, which I could not locate on a map. I tried to see if it could have been Summersville, Green Co., KY, but again, nothing. Could this really have been Somerset, Somerset Co., PA?? I could not find him in census, historical newspapers, nor Find a Grave, either.

Note: Although I’m actually researching descendants of my Martin Loy (to America 1741), shortly after beginning this site in late 1990s, to help those from other branches I added group sheets of other Loy immigrant families for the first few generations. At the time, I didn’t have full access to census, online newspapers, and other records to verify information I had been given by other researchers.

As I’m converting these pages from my “old” site into new pages for this new WordPress site, I’m trying to go through and personally verify what information I have been given. There was quite a bit of conflicting data, not just from incorrect information I’d been given in late 1990s, but in current online trees I’m seeing questionable information that’s not been documented, either. As a result, I’m including caveats of what I have been able to document and what I have not been able to.

I was unable to find in any census, old newspapers, Find a Grave, or any FamilySearch.org online records or trees authenticated information on Annie Jane Loy, Elizabeth Loy and husband D. Daniel Morris, Isabella Susan Loy, Margaretta Loy, or Charles McDowell Loy. That doesn’t mean they didn’t exist. Just that I was unable to verify information I had been given by others. With some of the children, I was able to establish an estimated birth year, from age at death or in census. With this new information, I needed to switch birth order on several of the children. For those without known dates, the birth order in which I list them here are not necessarily their true birth order.

Some death dates will show earlier than what is shown at Find a Grave, as there are some graves, mostly without markers, that were given with burial dates as death dates. The following I was able to verify through obituaries. Captain James Ferguson Loy’s obituary gives his death as near midnight, 28 January 1875 in Green Bay, WI, but one of his Find a Grave memorials gives 31 January and a duplicate memorial (his Civil War service stone) shows no dates. (Due to veterans’ gravestones being free from the government, many veterans were buried with duplicate stones. When first names differed, it’s easy to confuse these veterans’ graves as being two graves, rather than one grave with two markers.) David’s Find a Grave memorial gives 1 September 1873 death, which was actually his date of burial. Mary (Loy) Frampton McCreary’s death has been given in many genealogies as 19 January 1888, however I found two of her 1887 obituaries, which also indicated she had a second marriage, to a Mr. McCreary.
