John Loy (christened 9 June 1734 Dufton, Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.—burial 27 July 1805 [at age 71] Dufton, Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.)
md. (#1)
Elizabeth _____ (ca. 1737—burial 28 February 1772 [at age 35] Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.)
md. (#2) 11 Jun 1781 (Dufton, Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.)
Anne Bellas (ca. 1747 [age 34 at time of marriage, age 76 at time of death]—burial 12 July 1823 Dufton, Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.)
John was son of Lancelot and Elizabeth Loy. This was likely the Lancelot Loy that md. 24 June 1733 (Cilburn, Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.) Elizabeth Workman. And this may have been the same Lancelot Loy (christened Lancelotus Loy 22 January 1694 [died at age 83]—burial as Lancelot Loy 27 July 1777 Dufton, Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, U.K.) who was son of Johannis and Annae Loy. Johannis and Annae had five children in Westmorland Co., ENGLAND.
In John and Anne’s son Thomas’ transcribed christening record, Thomas’ mother is given as “Anne Atkinson,” while another entry gives “Anne Atkinson Bellas.”
John and both wives stayed in Westmorland Co., ENGLAND, but at least three great-grandsons by Elizabeth (Thomas, John, and Robert Loy) migrated to America in 1856. Through census, church, and other records found at FamilySearch.org, I was able to trace the three Loy brothers’ ancestry.
During the late 1600s and early 1700s persecution of Huguenots along the modern France-Germany border, many Huguenot families would have found refuge in Great Britain. Thus, there were Loy families in what then consisted of Great Britain, including Ireland and Scotland, that likely had origins in modern France and Germany.
