Matthias Loy (to America 1733)

Matthias Loy (22 February 1706 Baden, Germany—26 August 1783 Greenwich Twp., Berks Co., PA)
md.
Catherina Anna Kumpf (27 February 1711 Baden, Germany—14 December
1786 Greenwich Twp., Berks Co., PA) d/o Johan Conrad and Anna Maria Kumpf.

Matthias arrived in Philadelphia, PA on 17 September 1733, on the ship Samuel. The Kumpfs arrived on the same ship as Matthias. It has been said that their other daughter Maria Elizabetha Kumpf married John Heinrich Loy (to America 1733). This is according to “Loy Family In America” by William Lynch. Other researchers have disputed HER being a Kumpf as well (q.v.). While some of Matthias’ descendants have given Matthias’ wife as Catherine Anna Kumpf, the History of Lehigh Co., PA states that Matthias’ wife was Anna Maria, no maiden name given. Al Myers’ website gives her surname as Day. The History of Lehigh Co., PA also states that Matthias was brother to Hans Jurich (John Georg(e)) Loy, both Matthias and Hans Jurich being on the tax list of Greenwich Twp., Bucks Co., PA in 1756.

Matthias’ will was dated 22 February 1762, proven 22 October 1783, recorded in will book B, pg. 74.

At the time of writing this page in the early 2000s, I had many variations of this family given me. Those researching should double-check this information with other reliable sources. Although I have tried to verify this to best of my ability; not being from this line, I don’t claim to be an authority on this branch. I must admit, I have found many “holes” and misspelling errors in “Loy Family In America” by William Lynch (including him calling me Deborah in the book!); I found the Adam Loy that married Susanna Focht given there was really the Adam Loy, son of Matthias Loy, Jr. Thus, I was hesitant to include Lynch’s book among my sources.

The contributor of information on this page gave sources from the History of Lehigh Co., PA Vol. 3 (by Charles Rhoads Roberts); Falkner Swamp Church, New Hanover, Berks Co., PA; Rev. John Casper Stoever records; the will of Matthias Loy, Berks Co., PA; and Allemanuel Lutheran Church, Albany Twp., Berks Co., PA. As most of my research efforts has gone on my Martin Loy (to America 1741) branch, I really have not done real research on this branch. That is, save (out of curiosity) to research and connect several “stray” Loys I have found to this branch.

On Al Myers’ website, it gives a transcription of Matthias’ original tombstone, written in German. Having studied German for many years, I could make out the words, though several German words were either misspelled, or misread during the original transcription from the stone. Matthias’ birth date there was given as “22 Jen,” which in German should be “22 Jan,” meaning 22 Januar, which translates the same in English by adding the letter “y.” It further goes on to read that he and his wife had 10 children, but at time of Matthias’ death, only 3 sons (Sohn) and 4 daughters (Tochter) were living. In German, the name “Matthias” should be spelled the same, unless the person engraving the stone did the misspelling. Translated from this transcription on Al Myers’ page, the stone reads, “In this grave rests the remains of Matthaus Ley, who was born 22 January A.D. 1706. With his ___ wife Ana Maria, he fathered in __ years’ time from marriage 10 children. ___ jens, yet 3 sons and 4 daughters survive. He died 26 August 1783.” [Note: The only thing I can figure “jens” means is the abbreviation of “Jenseits,” which means “the hereafter,” referring to those that died before Matthias did.] On Matthias’ new stone, erected by a descendant, a 22 February 1706 birth date is given.
